Candle Safety 101: The Top 3 Things You Should Know!
Candles give us a way of transforming our homes and creating unique experiences. The right candle can makes your meal much more romantic or a room more relaxing.
However, it’s easy to forget that these inviting aromas are the creation from fiery divas. Every year I hear news reports about home fires attributed to the careless burning of candles and every year I know that these tragic accidents could easily have been prevented by following these 3 simple practices.
1) Pay Attention to Your Candle!
While Robbins Candle Co. uses cans that are great heat insulators, they still carry an open flame, so once you light a candle, you must keep an eye on it.
Now we are not saying watch it like a hawk, however, checking the steadiness and height of the flame is always a smart idea.
If something doesn’t look right, extinguish it!
Now I am all for a candle around my bath time, however, we never recommend burning candles in rooms, like bathrooms and bedrooms, that aren’t continually occupied.
We also recommend enjoying your candle for a maximum of four hours at a time. Like any good fire deamon, working them too hard could cause you some trouble. Burning your candle for longer than the recommend hours increases the risk of smoking due to the wick being too long and the flame burning too hot.
It’s easy to get caught up in the activities of the day and forget about candles that are burning in other rooms. The safest rule to follow is: If you can’t see the candles, they shouldn’t be lit.
So this Robbins Candle Safety rule is simple. If you will be lighting a candle, always be present. Never leave it unattended or alone. I recommend to always stay in the same room and avoid falling asleep. Make sure it is also placed on a flat level surface, out of reach from pets and children. You wouldn’t want them playing with open flames.
2) There is No Need to Add Anything!
Our candles are handmade and tested within our own home before we sell then online, they are perfect just the way they are!
So we don’t recommend putting anything in to our candle or attempting to move then from their containers. We’re not about that dangerous lifestyle. PLEASE SAFETY FIRST!
We also must ask you remove nearby decorations when burning candles. It’s not just about what can be added to the candle, but what is around the outside! We know the beauty of nesting a candle into decoration, adding a ribbon or greenery, but such an arrangement can be a recipe for disaster.
Keep decorations, whether real or artificial, at safe distance from burning candles. At Robbins Candle Co. we understand that asthetics can mean alot when using a candle, so please only use recommend wraps or covers, when is comes to decorating our canned candles.
3) Everyone Needs a Hair Cut!
Wicks are included in this statement! So although you might have heard this before, it is super important to trim the wick of your candle. This important step takes only seconds to do and has a major impact on how the flame burns. With a short wick, the flame is steady and controlled. Light a long wick and the flame lengthens and flickers excessively. A long, erratic flame can easily ignite nearby fabrics or decorations. Before you light any candle, trim the wick to 1/4″ long (5mm).
Safety is always a priority!
